At a public event Wednesday, March 23rd, City of La Crosse Environmental Planner dedicated an art banner marking the City’s Climate Action Planning process. The event was held at the Black River Beach Neighborhood Center prior to a community presentation and listening session to gather input on the Climate Action Plan.
Thanks to funds from the City of La Crosse Arts Board, the climate action planning process will include four identical moveable banners placed around the city during the process. Their intention is to get viewers to think about a sustainable future and access a QR code to provide survey responses about climate action they’d liked to see. The banners were created by the artist team of Monica Durr, Tylar Oehler, and Matthew Bergs, who were selected through a public call to artists. These artists and one of the banners will be present for the dedication before the meeting. The banners will initially be placed at City Hall, the Main Public Library, People’s Food Coop, and Pump House Regional Arts Center.
Community Presentation and Input
The City’s climate action planning consultant, paleBLUEdot provided a presentation following the dedication of the art banner. The presentation provided a summary of current and future climate change impacts in La Crosse and the citywide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The presentation also provided an overview of the project and planning process and a high level review of the types of solutions likely to come out of that planning process.
Input on Draft Plan Goals and Action Ideas
Following the presentation, community members were able to review the Climate Action Plan’s preliminary Draft Goals in nine community wide sectors. Participants also provided their input on ideas for potential actions the City might explore for inclusion in the plan.
